In this article you will get to know Jonas better. A lovely boy with Down syndrome who cruises around on his kick bike Krabat Runner.

Say hello to Jonas

Jonas lives in Eastern Norway with his family. He loves animals – especially his rabbit Nin and the family cat, Pus. He loves swimming, traveling and singing birthday songs. YouTube, Captein Sabertooth and Putti Plutti Pott and Santa’s Beard are other favorites. Jonas is a boy who really loves speed and excitement, so it’s perhaps no wonder that he got a taste for Krabat Runner after he tried it out.

Clinical background

Children with Down syndrome are as unique as all other children, with different dreams and needs. Many children born with Down syndrome can be hypotonic (low level of mucle tone) and have a later motor and cognitive development than other children. In these cases, physiotherapy treatment and various aids may be needed. Jonas has already been through a lot in life; he has had to learn to walk again three times, in 2013 he had a stroke that led to paralysis on the right side of his body, he has undergone hip surgery after suffering frequent dislocations and in addition to all that he has also been through four heart surgeries. Despite this, Jonas has a strength, joy and love that is incredibly inspiring.

The goal of the Krabat Runner kick bike

Scooters and kick bikes are everywhere—and kids love them. Jonas and his sister both got a two-wheeled scooter. Unfortunately, it didn’t take long before both his sister, cousin and friends sped ahead, while Jonas was left behind. With impaired balance and unequal leg length, a two-wheeled scooter demanded too much.

Fortunately, his mother Nina read about the Krabat Runner online and arranged for a trial at school. After a short time, Jonas mastered the Krabat Runner and was able to keep up with the others in the schoolyard. Since the Krabat Runner can be used both with and without a seat, Jonas has set a personal goal: to ride without a seat.

Goals summarized

  • Play and fun
  • Involvement with friends and family
  • Strengthen his right leg
  • Improve balance
  • Use without a seat

Result

Jonas now keeps up with family and friends, building balance and strength along the way. And in true Jonas fashion, the funniest part about the Runner is still trying to gently bump into Mum, Nina, mid-ride.
